Hidden Guide: The Bends

Line1

Submitted by: Main Stream & Ayana
Notes: In The Bends there is a picture of a shopping center next to Fake Plastic Trees. It is "canary wharf" in somewhere in England. That might be why the Fake Plastic Trees video is in a shopping center.

Correction: Canary Wharf (which Thom drew a picture of for the sleeve of The Bends) is not 'a shopping center' it's a block of offices. It was built in the eighties and is the tallest office block in England. It used to be busy and prosperous, but now it is completely empty. Presumably it's put next to Fake Plastic Trees because the song is also about how the eighties was such a money-hungry period in time and many people now feel disillusioned by it. Also, it's not just 'somewhere in England' it's in London.

Correction:It is pretty much full now.

Notes: Unfold the whole cover booklet so that the part that says Radiohead and The Bends (cover page) is at the bottom. On the first and second strips, a figure is drawn... It says 'a wingless angel' going up the side of his body and 'with a handful of crumpled stars' next to his left hand. I was just posting this because some people can't read it.

Song: The Bends
Notes: In the beginning of The Bends, you can hear a marching band play with the conductor saying, "Bring it up, bring it up!" I read somewhere that Thom recorded this outside his hotel window in the U.S. somewhere, I can't remember where...
Addition: Thom was at a hotel in Phoenix, AZ.

Song: Just
Notes: For those of you who can't understand what Thom shouts at the end of Just, he repeats this over and over:

Why do you do it to yourself?
  You stupid bloke.

Video: Street Spirit
Notes: The shot of a robed figure slowly leaping through the air is lifted directly from Max Ernst's painting The Angel Of Hearth And Home.

Video: High 7 Dry [US version]
Notes: The N on the phone box towards the end is back to front. Also, in the early scene where the band are being served, the camera makes the identity bracelet the waitress is wearing strongly resemble Jonny's arm brace.
